More connections with the american continent, earlier access: the Azores gain a direct air link boost from the US
Great news for anyone planning to visit the Azores from the United States: United Airlines is bringing forward the start of its seasonal direct route between Newark (New York) and Ponta Delgada to May 2026.
After the 2025 operation launched only in early June, the American carrier is expected to begin flights in the first half of May, strengthening air access to the archipelago during a period that is increasingly popular with international visitors.
Why May in the Azores?
This is excellent news for the Azores as a destination — and for São Miguel in particular. May is one of the best months to visit the island:
- 🌿 Lush landscapes — vegetation is at its peak, with hydrangeas beginning to bloom and deep-blue crater lakes
- 🌤️ Mild weather — pleasant temperatures between 16°C and 22°C, perfect for exploring
- 🧘 Fewer crowds — trails, viewpoints, and restaurants without the summer rush
- 🥾 Ideal conditions for outdoor activities — hiking, canyoning, diving, and whale watching
More Flexibility to Plan Your Trip
For travellers seeking an authentic experience, this earlier flight availability means greater flexibility and the chance to find:
- Better airfares — travelling before peak summer often means more affordable prices
- More accommodation options — wider availability and better value for money
- Relaxed itineraries — time to explore at your own pace, without the rush
What This Means for the Azores
United Airlines reinforcing this route is a clear sign of growing international interest in the Azores as a nature and adventure destination. For São Miguel, it means more visitors during a time of year that offers, arguably, the island at its very best.
